If the simplification of hieroglyphs is an unambiguous benefit for the Chinese language, then why was the reform not completed? Why was it cut short halfway? Why is there no steady and targeted simplification of hieroglyphs in the PRC now: if "the simpler, the better", then over so many decades it would have been possible, if not to switch to pinyin altogether, then certainly to reduce all hieroglyphics to the state of cuneiform! But this is not done. Why?
The reform was forced to stop because it ran into objective linguistic laws, which signaled that further simplification of writing was no longer just a graphic reform, but a step towards changing the very nature of language.
